Muscat – Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to pose a major public health burden in Oman, with one in three adults living with hypertension and more than 60% classified as overweight or obese, according to the 2025 National Survey of Non-Communicable Diseases released by the Ministry of Health on Sunday. Conducted on a nationally representative sample of more than 10,000 citizens and residents aged 15 and older, the survey assessed lifestyle behaviours, clinical indicators and key risk factors. H E Dr Ahmed bin Salim Al Mandhari, Undersecretary for Planning and Health Regulation, said the findings provide updated evidence to guide national health planning in line with Oman Vision 2040 and Sustainable Development Goal 3, which targets a reduction in premature deaths from NCDs. H E Dr Ahmed bin Salim Al Mandhari, Undersecretary for Planning and Health Regulation The data shows that nearly one in three adults has three or more NCD risk factors. Hypertension affects one in three adults, rising to about 40% among those aged 35 and older. However, only around 30% of those affected are aware of their condition. Among diagnosed cases, more than 80% are receiving medication. High blood sugar affects one in seven adults, with prevalence increasing to one in five among those aged 35 and older. Awareness stands at roughly 60%, and more than 95% of diagnosed individuals are on treatment. High cholesterol is reported in one in three adults, yet only about 20% are aware of their status. Around 60% of diagnosed cases are on medication. Among those aged over 40, prevalence reaches approximately 40%. Obesity remains widespread, with over 60% adults either overweight or obese, and more than a quarter falling within the obese category. Behavioural risk factors also remain significant. One in six adult males currently uses tobacco. Although 40% of smokers attempted to quit in the past year, exposure to second-hand smoke continues, affecting 16% of adults at home and 20% at workplaces. Support for stronger tobacco control measures is high, with nearly 90% backing higher taxes and stricter regulations. Diet and physical inactivity add to the burden. More than 60% of adults do not meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, while over a quarter fail to achieve adequate physical activity levels. Dr Shatha Saud Al Ruqaishi, Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Department, said the survey offers a comprehensive picture of risk patterns and priority areas for intervention. According to officials, the next phase will focus on translating data into targeted policies and preventive programmes.
