Breaking bread and barriers at historic Muttrah souq

Muscat – Ramadan is a month of giving, forgiveness and tolerance. It is also a time when cultures come together, creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to experience the spiritual and communal essence of fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam. At Muttrah Souq, this spirit of togetherness was clearly visible as Muslims and non-Muslims gathered for iftar on Monday. The historic marketplace, one of the most vibrant landmarks in Muscat, transformed into a welcoming space where people from around the world shared a simple meal all seated on the cobbled lanes. As the call to prayer signalled the end of a nearly 13-hour fast, people sat side by side breaking their fast with dates, fruits and water before enjoying a hearty meal together. Among them were tourists who experienced Ramadan in Oman for the first time, joining locals and expatriates in a unique moment of cultural exchange. Patrick, a vlogger from Europe, said, “This is the first time ever for me and the experience is indeed deeply moving. At a time when the world is going through such difficult circumstances and ordinary people often suffer the most, acts of kindness like this are very important. It is not only cultural but also a way to understand one another better.” The iftar at Muttrah Souq is largely organised by shopkeepers who share meals with fellow traders and visitors. More than 1,000 people are served food every few days depending on the collection made by the organisers. The gathering includes expatriate workers from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, alongside Omanis and tourists. Asif MV from India said the tradition has been continuing for years. “Ramadan is a time when we all come together. We meet old friends and sometimes even relatives. Muttrah Souq holds a special place in the heart of Muscat, and these iftars remind us that even in difficult times, we remain united.”
