Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) is preparing a comprehensive strategic study to accelerate the growth of Oman’s cruise ship and yacht sector, as part of broader efforts to attract more tourists and support the national economy. An official at the ministry informed that 137,330 tourists visited the sultanate via cruise ships and yachts in 2025, underscoring the sector’s growing contribution to the country’s tourism performance. The official said MHT, in partnership with relevant entities, is intensifying efforts to attract international cruise liners and private yachts from target markets. The move aims to reinforce Oman’s standing as a distinguished maritime destination in the region and strengthen the sector’s role in economic diversification. According to the official, the ministry is working closely with a specialised consulting firm to develop a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the cruise and yacht segment. The study will assess the current regulatory, operational and competitive landscape and outline a future vision supported by a clear implementation plan. The strategy also focuses on modernising and upgrading facilities at ports in cooperation with concerned authorities. Key initiatives under review include enhancing the efficiency of port and marina operations, improving coordination among stakeholders, and maximising economic returns generated by cruise ship calls. In addition, the ministry is exploring joint incentive programmes with public and private sector partners to boost the attractiveness of Omani ports as regional hubs for cruise tourism. Efforts are also under way to evaluate operational and promotional alternatives and to maintain direct engagement with leading international cruise lines to ensure the continued inclusion of Omani ports in global itineraries. As part of the 2025/2026 cruise season, programmes for passengers will resume for the cruise ship Vasco da Gama, which is scheduled to arrive at Port of Salalah on March 24. Celestyal Journey will continue its calls to Port of Khasab, with five visits planned during the season. Aroya made its maiden call at Khasab recently and arrived at Sultan Qaboos Port on Monday. It is expected to make 11 calls at Khasab and five at Sultan Qaboos Port during the 2025/2026 season. Officials stressed that the integrated strategy and targeted incentives are designed to enhance visitor experience, keep pace with global developments in cruise tourism and position Oman as a preferred stop on regional and international cruise routes.
