Pilbara, Australia – A major weather emergency is unfolding in Western Australia as Severe Tropical Cyclone Mitchell bears down on the Pilbara coast, a region critical to global iron ore and energy exports. Currently classified as a Category 3 system, the cyclone is tracking south-west along the coastline, parallel to some of the world’s largest bulk-export ports. International monitoring agencies and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology have warned that the storm is packing sustained winds of 140 km/h, with “very destructive” gusts reaching speeds of up to 195 km/h near its core. The sheer velocity of the wind has already been felt on offshore installations, with Legendre Island recording a peak gust of 163 km/h as the eyewall grazed the area. On the mainland, residents describe the sound of the approaching winds as “screaming,” while authorities have issued a “shelter indoors immediately” directive for communities between Dampier and Onslow. Landfall is anticipated between Onslow and Exmouth late Sunday or early Monday, bringing with it a dangerous combination of a significant storm surge, abnormally high tides, and torrential rainfall that could exceed 100mm in localized bursts. The global impact is already being felt in the shipping industry, with major ports including Port Hedland and Dampier suspending operations to clear vessels from the cyclone’s projected path. As the system moves inland, it is expected to weaken, but the risk of widespread flash flooding remains high. Emergency services are on high alert, and evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate those in low-lying coastal areas or substandard housing.
