Muscat – The Ministry of Education has launched a significant digital awareness campaign to mark Safer Internet Day. Under the theme “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI” the initiative aims to transition users from basic digital browsing to a stage of conscious “digital awareness”. This proactive approach is designed to ensure safe and professional participation in the digital space through the adoption of specific protective measures. Educational authorities have highlighted several key areas of concern, notably the risk of digital “ambushes” where attackers exploit curiosity regarding free security tests to install malicious links. The Ministry advises the public to rely exclusively on official platforms and avoid clicking on unknown links. Furthermore, in an era of advancing artificial intelligence, extreme caution is urged regarding the sharing of personal images or videos to prevent the misuse of Deepfake technology. To bolster self-protection, the Ministry has recommended that users go beyond simply sharing safety information and take active steps to secure their digital environments. This includes the immediate updating of passwords to complex and unique variations to make personal accounts more resilient against hacking attempts. These guidelines form part of a broader effort to foster a secure and informed digital culture across the Sultanate.
