Muscat – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has approved the first national standard for Omani plaster, known locally as sarooj, in a move aimed at preserving urban identity and supporting local products. The new standard, issued under OS 1657/2025, sets out specifications governing the production and quality of sarooj, a traditional material widely used in forts and historic buildings across the sultanate. According to the ministry, the standard defines the physical and chemical properties of the material, along with raw material requirements and manufacturing processes. It also outlines sampling and storage methods, quality and durability tests, and packaging requirements in both Arabic and English. Sarooj is regarded as a key material in Omani architecture and has historically been used in the construction of castles, forts and heritage structures. Officials said the approval of a unified national benchmark will help ensure consistent quality while safeguarding the architectural character associated with the material. MoCIIP stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to reinforce confidence in national products and reduce reliance on imports. By formalising specifications and testing procedures, the standard is expected to support local manufacturers and enhance competitiveness in the construction sector. Authorities said the framework will also contribute to preserving architectural identity by ensuring that materials used in restoration and new heritage-style projects meet defined technical criteria. The approved standard is accessible through the ministry’s official platforms, enabling manufacturers, contractors and stakeholders to review technical requirements and ensure compliance. Officials described the move as a step towards strengthening the regulatory environment for building materials while promoting sustainable use of traditional construction techniques in line with national development objectives.
