Muscat – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has issued a warning against holding commercial exhibitions in private homes, stressing that such activities violate existing laws and expose organisers to legal action. In a public awareness notice circulated on social media, the ministry stated that exhibitions and sales events conducted in homes without proper licences are considered ‘unauthorised practices’ and fall outside the regulatory framework governing commercial activities in the sultanate. The notice clearly labels private home exhibitions as illegal, reiterating that organising or participating in such events may result in legal accountability. It urged the public not to take part in such events and to ensure that any exhibitions they join are held at approved and licensed venues. MoCIIP said the move is part of broader efforts to regulate the exhibitions sector, protect consumers and ensure fair competition in the market. ‘Licensed exhibitions are subject to standards related to safety, consumer protection and commercial registration, while unlicensed events operate without oversight.’ The ministry is focused on regulating emerging forms of commerce, including pop-up markets and home-based sales promoted through social media. While home-based businesses are permitted under certain licensing frameworks, turning private residences into exhibition venues for multiple vendors requires official approval, it added. Industry observers note that exhibitions have become a popular channel for small and medium enterprises, artisans and home-based entrepreneurs to showcase products ranging from handicrafts and perfumes to food items and fashion. However, authorities emphasise that growth in this segment must align with regulations.
