MoL issues Ramadan workplace safety guidelines

Muscat – The Ministry of Labour (MoL) has issued occupational health and safety guidelines for Ramadan, calling on employers to ensure a safe and healthy working environment that takes into account the physical demands of fasting. In its advisory, the ministry emphasised that employers bear responsibility for protecting workers’ wellbeing during Ramadan by implementing appropriate precautionary measures. Key directives include monitoring signs of employee fatigue and taking timely action to mitigate risks, particularly for those engaged in physically demanding roles. MoL also urged companies to reduce working hours for outdoor jobs carried out under direct sunlight and to introduce flexible shift arrangements while avoiding extended working hours. Employers have been advised to minimise workplace stress, enhance awareness of potential hazards and preventive measures, and ensure the availability of first aid supplies alongside clear emergency response procedures. The guidelines further stress the importance of providing cool water for face washing, ensuring the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and enhancing journey management procedures to limit unnecessary travel. For employees, MoL recommends prioritising adequate sleep, delaying suhoor and opting for fibre-rich foods, and maintaining proper hydration during non-fasting hours. Workers are also advised to limit caffeine and sugary drinks at iftar, adhere strictly to occupational health and safety instructions, and inform supervisors of any chronic health conditions or medications.
