Muscat – Muscat Municipality has concluded an extensive on-ground parking survey as part of the Muscat Traffic Study 2025, aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing the overall road user experience across the capital. The survey covered eight high-demand locations: Al Khoudh Market, Seeb Market, Qurum Commercial Area, Al Khuwair, Ghubrah, Qurum Beach, Al Barakat Street and Al Maha Street. These areas were selected due to heavy traffic volumes and persistent parking pressure. According to figures released by the municipality, 4,855 parking spaces were assessed. Each site was divided into up to 11 coverage zones to ensure detailed monitoring and accurate data collection. The exercise was conducted using drone-based technology over a five-day period at each site. Surveys were carried out daily from 7am to 9pm, with monitoring undertaken every 15 minutes to capture precise occupancy rates and usage trends. In total, drones surveyed 1,152km, averaging 6km per survey, with up to 15 surveys conducted per site per day. Officials said the parking assessment forms a key component of the broader traffic study, focusing on evaluating current usage patterns and developing practical, sustainable solutions to better organise parking and reduce congestion caused by unregulated parking. The findings are expected to support evidence-based planning decisions and contribute to more efficient traffic management in commercial and residential areas across Muscat.
