Muscat – Oman has expressed its deep concern regarding recent maritime coordinates and maps submitted by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations. In an official statement released by the Foreign Ministry on February 23, the Sultanate noted that these documents impact the established sovereignty of the State of Kuwait over its maritime territories and stable water elevations. Oman formally declared its full solidarity with Kuwait, emphasising the necessity of respecting the sovereignty of the neighbouring state over all its maritime zones. The Ministry further urged the Republic of Iraq to consider the historical and brotherly ties shared with Kuwait, as well as the essential principles of good neighbourliness and international law. The Sultanate’s appeal highlighted the importance of adhering to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Oman called for a resolution that aligns with existing bilateral understandings and agreements between the two nations, stressing that regional stability relies on upholding international legal standards and maintaining the spirit of cooperation between sisterly Arab states.
