Public Prosecution reveals 19% surge in legal cases during 2025 annual briefing

Muscat – The Public Prosecution held its annual press conference to unveil the comprehensive performance indicators and statistical data for the year 2025. The report detailed a significant rise in legal activity, revealing that the department handled a total of 55,164 cases over the past year. This figure represents a 19% increase compared to 2024, with the institution maintaining a high efficiency rate by successfully processing 98.4% of all matters brought before it. The breakdown of these figures shows a notable rise across different legal categories. Misdemeanours accounted for the vast majority of the workload with 52,553 cases, marking a 19.6% increase. Felonies also saw a rise of 13.7%, totaling 2,593 cases, while the remaining files consisted of administrative complaints and various violations. This surge in litigation was accompanied by a 24.7% increase in the number of accused individuals, which reached 73,391. Demographically, males constituted 89.2% of the accused, while foreign nationals made up 47.5% and juveniles accounted for 1.6%.
